Autism symptoms in women
Autism has been under-recognised in women for decades, because much of the early research was built around boys. Autistic women more often mask their traits — studying and copying social behaviour so well that the effort stays invisible — which means many are missed, or diagnosed with anxiety or depression first and autism only much later.
The patterns below are how autism frequently presents in women. If they resonate, the AQ-10 autism screening is a quick, private starting point before seeking an assessment.

How it specifically shows up in women
- Skilled masking
- Rehearsing conversations, mirroring others, and forcing eye contact to fit in — often so well that friends and even clinicians do not suspect autism, at a high cost in exhaustion.
- Internalising rather than acting out
- Distress turns inward as anxiety, low mood, or perfectionism rather than outward behaviour, so it gets labelled as those instead.
- "Acceptable" intense interests
- Deep focus on people, animals, books, or art can look like ordinary enthusiasm, so the tell-tale intensity is overlooked.
- Social exhaustion and burnout
- Socialising is manageable in bursts but drains deeply, and years of masking can build to autistic burnout — a collapse in capacity often mistaken for depression.
- Sensory sensitivities
- Strong reactions to noise, light, textures, or clothing that are managed quietly rather than shown, and easy to dismiss as being "fussy".
