Autism symptoms in men
Autism was first described largely through boys and men, so the "classic" picture is really the male-typical one — which means men are more often recognised, but also that the recognition can be narrow. Plenty of autistic men are still diagnosed late, especially those who are quiet and capable rather than obviously struggling.
The traits below are how autism frequently presents in men. If they fit, the AQ-10 autism screening is a brief, private first step toward clarity.

How it specifically shows up in men
- More visible social differences
- Difficulty with small talk and eye contact, and a direct, literal style, tend to be more outwardly noticeable than in women — though "outwardly" is relative.
- Systemising and detail focus
- A pull toward systems, patterns, categories, and how things work — often channelled into deep expertise in a specific field or hobby.
- Routine and predictability
- A strong preference for sameness and clear rules, with real discomfort when plans change unexpectedly.
- Sensory load
- Noise, light, and busy environments can be draining or overwhelming, sometimes managed by withdrawing to somewhere quiet.
- Missed when high-functioning
- Men who cope at work and mask reasonably well are frequently overlooked until burnout, a relationship strain, or a family diagnosis prompts a closer look.
